Coloropoly

Key Roles:

Software Used:

Designer,  Programmer, Artist

Unity, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max

I designed Coloropoly to be a re-imagined theme for Monopoly where the player is an artist that is trying to collect colors.  Players are represented by colorful character pawns that bounce from space to space, and they use dice with pips that match their chosen color.  Each "property" is a different color within a color family that makes up the classic monopoly.  For example, owning Chartreuse, Emerald, and Sage grants the player the Green monopoly.

Colorpoly was a solo project, so I did it all.  But some of the tasks I performed are:

  • Conceptualize a new and unique theme that works with existing mechanics

  • Flowchart and plan game flow to be able to effectively incorporate all game rules

  • Program all game mechanics and features

  • Produce art for game board cards, pawns, and UI

  • Design, and script the layout and functionality of the inventory and property management systems

  • Animate game pieces via code to hop from space to space

  • Script the Go To Jail sequence including dropping a jail cage over the player

The dice roll is done with physics simulation to provide the same feel watching real dice and anticipating the outcome.

Coloropoly stays true to the mechanics of the classic game while giving it a fresh new coat of paint.

Color inventory is displayed in each of the player cards at the bottom of the screen, but each player can open that to get additional information about each color that they own and purchase or sell improvements or to sell out or restock.

These are two examples of the flow charts I built to plan out the game play and rules of the game.  These were invaluable in keeping the Coloropoly grounded in a specific set of procedures.
